<image:caption>Aerial view of area south of Split Mountain and Cardinal Peak, including Mount Pinchot (left), Striped Mountain (center-right), and Goodale Mountain (right), from ~3000 m altitude. Here, the prominent granite is Cretaceous and overlies coeval layered diorites, as in Torres del Paine. Mount Pinchot and the dark rocks at right-center are a continuation of the metamorphic screen under Split Mountain, and the Cretaceous Striped pluton likely sits above this screen in a manner similar to the Tinemaha Granodiorite on Split Mountain. See Bartley et al. (2012) for details.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Aerial view of Split Mountain from ~4000 m altitude, looking northwest. Leucogranite, locally stained deep orange, underlies dark brown metaclastic and buff metacarbonate rocks. These are in turn overlain by dark gray Jurassic Tinemaha Granodiorite. In Shelton’s black-and-white photograph the metamorphic rocks and granodiorite are barely distinguishable. Nevertheless, this is an excellent example of a flat-lying pluton floor that extends over several square km in this area (Bartley et al., 2012). Intermediate and mafic dikes cut through all the units. These are locally up to 10 m thick, and are highly composite.</image:caption>

<image:caption>OK, this may not be a spectacular photo, but it tells an interesting story. The vertical wall, carved in the old, pre-diversion fan, consists of young volcanic and sedimentary material from Gower Gulch proper. The much larger rocks littering the bottom of the active wash are exotic to the area and were carried down Furnace Creek Wash and then down little Gower Gulch. The larger floods that carried them were quite effective at cutting down into the old, soft fan. Twenty feet and counting.</image:caption>

The current parking area (which may have been ripped up in this month’s floods) covers most of where it was. The main wash comes in from the lower right (southeast), heads northwest, makes a hard left turn, and then debouches (a good geology word) onto the beautiful cone of the Furnace Creek alluvial fan. <image:title>Teaching Notes - A spreadsheet to help teach the rudiments of seismic tomography - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Seismic tomography spreadsheet problem. White values are time units (say, seconds) that a P-wave takes to cross that square; these are a priori data, observed, perhaps, by measurements in drill holes. Seismic travel-time studies have yielded the “Observed” values for total travel time in a given column or row (e.g., 18 for a wave traversing the first column). Your job is to fill in the blank squares so that your model values make the "Model” sums for rows and columns (red values) match the Observed values, in which case the differences will be zero.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Arthur Holmes (left) invented U-Pb dating for his undergraduate thesis project and later proposed mantle convection as the underlying cause of continental drift. His student Donald McIntyre (right) was my undergraduate mentor at Pomona College, and thus Holmes is my academic grandfather. McIntyre’s classes were glorious counterexamples to the belief that a good class needs a good syllabus. He came in and talked about whatever was interesting that day—commonly something about plate tectonics that he’d read in the latest issue of Nature.</image:caption>
